Top UK poker players – Dave Devilfish Ulliott
David Ulliott in one of the older style poker players and has a somewhat different style from the new generation of players who learned their poker skills online. He was born in 1954 and comes from Kingston upon Hull and for some time he was a mainstay of the Hull underworld scene and a hardnosed gambler. His nickname is Devilfish, which comes from the twin knuckledusters that he wears one of which is engraved with the word “devil” and the other with “fish”.
There are many anecdotes concerning his days as a criminal, but one of the more ironic ones concerns a time when he lost £5,000 on the horses. He waited until the local betting shop closed, then broke in and stole the safe, carrying it home in a pram. On that occasion he was caught and locked up for 9 months in Leeds Prison. Later he served a further 18 months in prison for armed robbery.
He started playing poker when he was a child and found that he was very good at it; gaining a reputation for being a strong home game player, playing at sites like betfair. Although he was very successful in local casinos when he moved to London it was a different story. London poker players were more sophisticated than those he was used to playing and at first he made some big losses, although after modifying his game he was soon winning again.
His first tournament cash was in 1993 and he gradually improved his poker so that by 1996 he was regularly winning and decided to try his luck at Las Vegas. He returned the following year for the WSOP and won his first and only WSOP bracelet and $180,000 prize money. Subsequently he concentrated on cash games where he was regularly making $15,000 a day and returned home with nearly $750,000 in cash. He won the 2003 World Poker Tour (WPT) when he collected around $590,000 and collected nearly $700,000 for a third place in the 2007 WPT Doyle Brunson Classic Event.
To date his total tournament winnings amount to around $6 million.
